WDW Marathon Weekend

Hello my fellow Disney/race lovers! The day is finally here! Day 1 of the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend. Okay…so the expo starts today and the first race isn’t until tomorrow, but I’m elated to head 14993366_10211128979685197_4433895299713898489_nover to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and check out all the awesome merchandise runDisney and all of the other vendors have to offer! If you haven’t checked that out yet, be sure to right now so you know what to run for once you get in 😉

For all of you who have never done a Disney race and this is your first experience, never fear! My first time was a bit confusing and I think I had to go with friends for the first 3 Disney expo’s before I was confident with where I was going. That could also be because I didn’t pay too much attention the first few times….oh well! Anyways, I’m here to help out those who don’t really have all the details about this event. Now, this is my first WDW Marathon Weekend, but this is not my first runDisney weekend. It’s my seventh, so at this point I have figured out a routine that works for me, and I hope it will help you too.

The expo schedule is:

  • Wednesday, Jan 4 – 12pm–8pm
  • Thursday, Jan 5 – 10 am–7 pm
  • Friday, Jan 6 – 10 am–7 pm
  • Saturday, Jan 7 – 10 am–4 pm

The race weekend schedule is:

  • Kids Races – Thursday, Jan 5 – Saturday, Jan 7:15822929_1725928310766457_6325674851241284561_n
    • Kids Dashes – 11am – ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex
    • Kids One Mile Run – 12:30pm – ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex
  • 5K – Thursday, Jan 5 – 6am – Epcot
  • 10K – Friday, Jan 6 – 5:30am – Epcot
  • Half Marathon – Saturday, Jan 7 – Epcot
  • Marathon – Sunday, Jan 8 – Epcot
  • Goofy Challenge – (Half Marathon & Full Marathon)
  • Dopey Challenge – (5k, 10k, Half Marathon, Full Marathon)
  • Castaway Cay 5K – Wednesday, Jan 11 – Bahamas

Once you get to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and walk through the gate, there are 3 potential buildings you could go in to. The first building on your left is called the Champion Stadium, which is for the runners signed up for the 5k & 10k. The second building on your left is the Field House, which is for if you’re running the half, full, goofy, or dopey challenge. This building is also for if you made any pre-purchases. Once you have finished with that, head out and go across to the other building, Jostens Center, where you will pick up your race shirt along with all the fun merchandise you could spend hours looking at! (Check out the Cigna Expo Booth for a free running belt).

In the past I have always gone after work and not been able to get some of the stuff on this list because people go crazy for it! If you go and don’t see what you’re wanting, I would keep an eye out online. At first, some people buy in bulk and sell them for profit, but eventually the price does go down (if you’re willing to wait it out and hope for the best).

Okay, now we’re finally ready to race! Are you dressing up? My favorite part about runDisney races is seeing how creative people can get to become a certain character. However, there are rules:

  • Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent
  • Guests may not wear masks of any kind
  • Guests who dress like Characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests
  • Costumes may not drag on the ground
  • Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest
  • Costumes may not contain any weapons which resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon
  • Guests who do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused entry into, and/or removed from, a race or any race related event/activity unless his or her costume can be modified to meet the above standards

If you’re wanting to try and get some pictures in front 15822719_1727312883961333_5555045286310991357_nof their backdrops or with characters before the race, the lines get pretty long. I suggest getting there AT LEAST an hour early, but even earlier could never hurt. I do an hour because that already causes me to wake up at 3:30am. I’m not sure I could wake up any earlier…Also, don’t forget to use these hashtags while you’re taking all of these pictures. Maybe runDisney will pick your picture to be featured on their site 😉

The most important thing to remember this weekend is to just have fun! It’s an incredible experience and I’m looking forward to marking this weekend off my checklist 🙂
